Description: The Biotechnology Education & Training Sequence Investment (BETSI) Project was established in 2004, funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant and built on the foundation of the Southwestern College Biotechnology Program. The BETSI Project was designed as "an educational cascade that starts with high school teacher training and student outreach, followed by the completion of the SWC Biotechnology Certification Program and internship opportunities, culminating with facilitation of jobs in the biotechnology industry." The BETSI Project has made several classroom activities available online including the activity featured here, "GMO Food Lab Procedures". This activity includes instructions on how to extract DNA from different foods and how to use PCR and gel analysis to detect whether the food or ingredients are genetically altered. This exercise should prove useful to any educator interested in Food Safety, DNA, or Genetic Modification.
