Description: The Real World Learning Objects Library presents a mathematical problem couched in real-life examples for this examination of prisons within a mathematic context. Students consider the business model of a prison, status of inmates, and the impact of gender from a perspective of numbers. Within this activity, students look at the Ohio prison staff and inmates, construct a contingency table, and come to conclusions using chi-square test statistics. Ideally, the activity concludes with a written report, which helpfully incorporates writing skills with mathematical ability of deduction. The activity includes detailed instructions, assessments, materials, and access to software for calculations.
