Creator: D’Alessandro, Donna M.
Publisher: GeneralPediatrics.com
Description: The goal of GeneralPediatrics.com is to identify and organize high quality, authoritative medical World Wide Web sites so that questions to common problems can be quickly and easily answered. GeneralPediatrics.com clearly notes the criteria for selection of the authoritative information, its curator, sponsors and currency of the information. GeneralPediatrics.com is written for and intended primarily for use by residents, fellows, or attending physicians practicing pediatrics. Medical students beginning their study of pediatrics or other health care providers practicing pediatrics may find it useful. GeneralPediatrics.com was developed using a literature-based needs analysis that was then validated by informal focus groups and end-user comment forms. We have performed studies that show that pediatricians are using the computer-based resources more to answer questions. These resources included GeneralPediatrics.com. We also conducted a randomized-controlled trial of information prescriptions (IPs) for parents. IPs are prescriptions of specific, evidence-based information to manage health problems. This study showed that GeneralPediatrics.com was commonly recommended by the study pediatricians. The IPs increased Internet utilization for general and child health information, but were not associated with a specific behavior change related to a particular recommended information resource. GeneralPediatrics.com supports the following ACGME competencies: patient care; medical knowledge; problem-based learning; and systems-based practice.
