Title: Stiffness Relevance and Strength Relevance in Crash of Car Body Components
Url: http://autocaat.org/WebForms/ResourceDetail.aspx?id=1464
Publisher: The Institut fur Kraftfahrzeuge at the University of Aachen in Germany
Description: This study was performed by the Institut fur Kraftfahrzeuge for the European Aluminum Association (EAA) to determine vehicle crash strength and stiffness relevance to explore possible weight reduction with high strength steel and aluminum. To determine possible reduction, quantitative values are determined for components using an FE reference model of a compact car and then compared with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) published values. It is found vehicle weight can be reduced by 11% using high strength steel and 40% with high strength aluminum. OEM experts are presented the results and interviewed. They agree with most of the studies conclusions.
