Description:
This lab experiment "uses a piece of galvanized metal to quantify the loss
of atoms during a chemical reaction." A piece of galvanized metal will be placed in muratic acid; students will re-determine the mass of the metal afterwards. The main goal of the experiment is to teach students the relative difference in reactives of iron and zinc to muratic acid.
This activity would be appropriate for high school level students. The lesson should take about 30 minutes of class time. This document will serve as a framework for instructors and may be downloaded in PDF format.
