Description: This paper, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, discusses using a problem based learning approach to analytical and applied chemistry. A case study is described which is based on an investigation of a fictitious suspicious death, and which relates both to analytical chemistry and forensic science. It is designed to be flexible, so that it may be altered for different types of courses. Examples of physical, chemical and toxicological evidence are included in the document.
