Url: https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Lessons/Smokey-...
Publisher: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Description: This interdisciplinary lesson ties earth science concepts in with algebra. The forest-fire danger rating index is applied to a mathematical model. Students will learn real-world meaning of the intercepts and slope in the Angstrom index as well as how to model the relationship between the slope of the land versus rate of fire spread. The material includes student activity sheets. It is intended for grades 9-12 and should require 3 and a half class periods to complete.
