Url: http://www.rrcc.edu/green/pdfs/Lightbulbs.pdf
Creator: Maher, Barbara
Publisher: Red Rocks Community College
Description: This interdisciplinary classroom exercise from GreenApps at Red Rocks Community College poses the question: Does switching to energy efficient light bulbs really make a difference? The exercise asks students to complete a hands-on investigation to determine which light bulb type produces the most heat and uses the most energy. Students will take measurements of temperature to estimate energy efficiency for various types of light bulbs and then compare the measurements. Required materials: a 100 watt incandescent light bulb, a 26 watt CFL bulb, 3 digital thermometers, a stopwatch, 2 bulb sockets (or a lamp), a power strip and a metal ruler. The lesson is appropriate for high school or lower level undergraduate students.
