Description: This scientific paper describes the isolation, identification and physiology a new species of iron-oxidizing Archaea capable of growth at pH 0. This species was isolated from an acid mine drainage site at Iron Mountain, California. Additionally, the authors also discuss the ecological niche occupied by this species and other closely related Thermoplasmales, their contribution to acid mine drainage and their impact on iron and sulfur cycles.
