Description: Mark C. Hersam presents an introduction to quantum mechanics and solid state physics. Northwestern University’s introductory course on physics covers a broad range of relevant topics, from free electron behavior and potential energy wells and barriers to bonding, energy band theory, and electrical properties of metals and semiconductors. Hersam has also compiled a list of pertinent articles and books on those subjects, and has recommended a textbook. Instructors could use this syllabus in designing their own courses, while students might want to use its book list and project description for assignments in their own classes.
