Title: A Secret History of Life on Land
Url: https://www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/a-secret-history-of-life...
Creator: Zimmer, Carl
Publisher: Discover Magazine
Description: This story from Discover Magazine follows the career of paleontologist Stephen Hasiotis, who specializes in terrestrial ichnology, as he searches for the tracks of ancient invertebrates, even where a fossil record is lacking. This paper covers his studies of the ancient termite mounds of Gallup, New Mexico; his early work on crayfish burrows of Utah; his work in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, including his discovery of a bees' nest in a forest area which is older than the rise of flowering plants; and his discovery of dermestid beetle markings on dinosaur fossils at the Dinosaur National Monument on the Utah-Colorado border.
