Title: Electromagnetic Radiation: On Trial
Url: http://cse.ssl.berkeley.edu/SegwayEd/abtemtrial.html
Publisher: University of California, Berkeley. Center for Science Education
Description: This activity introduces students to the properties of electromagnetic radiation in a variety of ways. For example, they put the different types of the electromagnetic radiation on trial, selecting the judge, prosecutor, defense counsel, and jury, and learning about electromagnetic energy by arguing the pros and cons of each wavelength. During this activity, students are introduced to the general properties of electromagnetic waves, learn to analyze the relation between the specific properties of waves and their position in the electromagnetic spectrum, and discuss methods used to detect and analyze different waves. Students also learn about scientists whose work contributed to our understanding of electromagnetic energy. Students are encouraged to use an electronic bulletin board to communicate with each other, posting insights, ideas, evidence and questions on electromagnetic energy.
