Title: Exploring Waste and Recycling: Ore Minerals and Mining PDF
Url: http://www.rrcc.edu/green/pdfs/OreMinerals.pdf
Publisher: Red Rocks Community College
Description: This resource, created by faculty at Red Rocks Community College, will introduce students to the concept of sustainability in terms of waste products and recycling practices, primarily focusing on ore mining. The activity places students in charge of a hypothetical mining operation. It has a primary goal having students consider all the waste involved in obtaining these minerals and best practices to limit these amounts. The activity employs skills in basic mathematics, reasoning and writing. It also crosses disciplines by implementing skills in environmental geology and science. Lesson plans such as these are supported by a grant under the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program.
