Title: Exploring Broadband Seismic Data in the Classroom
Url: https://serc.carleton.edu/usingdata/datasheets/BroadbandSeismic.html
Publisher: Science Education Resource Center
Description: This guide provides instructions for educators on the classroom use of seismic data from the Broadband Seismic Data Collection Center (BSDCC). BSDCC collects and distributes seismic data from several regional networks and instrument deployments, which are used by scientists to provide digital recordings of high-resolution seismic data for earthquakes and as a source of real-time data. Classroom topics include natural hazards, plate tectonics, seismic networks, and earthquakes. Student skills include understanding the collection and transmission of seismic data; interpreting earthquake data parameters, including location, depth, and magnitude; using seismic data to map plate boundaries; using the data to make predictions about where an earthquake might occur; and examining relationships between earthquake parameters and the underlying rock structure. Links are provided to portals for accessing the data and tools for manipulating it. There are also links to scientific references and educational resources that use this dataset, and to online resources with related information.
