Title: Urban Growth in American Cities
Url: https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/2004/circ1252/
Publisher: Geological Survey (U.S.)
Description: This online publication illustrates the spatial history of urban growth and corresponding land use change in sixteen areas around the United States. It features pairs of images of selected urban regions from across the nation which are intended to show the transformation that these areas have undergone over two decades, specifically increases in the extent of urban land. Each pair is composed of one image from the 1970s and one from the 1990s. Accompanying each pair is a brief historical geography outlining factors that helped facilitate major changes that have occurred since the founding of the main city and the consequences and challenges of regional urban growth. A downloadable, printable version is available.
