Description: Initially developed by NJCATE and a team of math, science, communications and technology faculty, this learning module employs the NJCATE Integrated Curriculum Model to integrate core and technical material. Accessing just-in-time learning concepts in which instructors function as coach/facilitators, the module guides students through core and technical activities built around a main project. Module activities present students with hands-on situations which simulate the workplace both in terms of the knowledge and skills required as well as the ethical concerns they will inevitably address.
Specifically, Module L examines electronics and electrical circuits as they are applied in industrial control systems. The approach to development of the module is grounded in the incorporation of an overall product development theme: exploration of alternative design concepts for a product vending machine.

The module explores alternative electrical/electronic approaches to three functional areas of a vending machine:
precise monitoring of the mixing of two liquids;
acceptance of and change making for U.S. coins; and
integration of a programmable logic controller (PLC) for monitoring and control of the vending machine.

The module's 11 learning activities encompass all three areas of product design. Two major technical focus areas will be explored by the student: semiconductor devices and circuits, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). A project will bring these two areas together in an integration of sensing electronics and a PLC.

Target Audience
2-4 Year College Students
