Description: This article presents an analysis of 802.11x network systems on three key fronts: throughput, security, and cost. Wireless local area networks (WLANs) are increasingly popular, but should they completely replace wired computer networks? This article gives an overview of 802.11x based wireless network technology and then looks at the benefits and drawbacks, including overall costs per end user, comparing 802.11b and 802.11a access points. The final analysis: "For much of corporate America, for the next year or two at least, WLANs will be most practical, and most easily justified, as an overlay to the wired network for users who need mobility to improve productivity."
