Title: The Scanning Tunneling Microscope -- What it is and how it works...
Url: http://www.iap.tuwien.ac.at/www/surface/STM_Gallery/stm_schematic.html
Publisher: Institut für Angewandte Physik
Description: This site comes from the Institut für Angewandte Physik at the University of Wien shows how the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) works. An animated drawing shows the parts of a microscope produce the image. The site provides a link to a gallery of scanning tunneling microscope images. Additional links to other galleries involving physics are provided. Some of these include: dislocations, surface reconstructions, crystallography of iron films, chemical contrast in scanning tunneling microscope, adsorption and adsorbates, segregation of impurity atoms, growth of lead on copper, growth of copper in lead and electron waves and orbitals. Overall, this is a nice collection of resources for those interested in more advanced aspects of physics.
