Creator: Savig, Berndt
Publisher: Red Rocks Community College
Description: This resource, created by Berndt Savig of Red Rocks Community College, will introduce students to economically sound package design practices. The overall premise of the project is for students to "design a container for a circular object with the goal of using less material to create the container than is used in traditionally shaped packing box[es]." The activity employs skills in basic model building and mathematics. It also crosses disciplines by implementing skills in the visual arts and three-dimensional design. The learning activity only takes about two to three hours and uses simple materials such as poster board, ping-pong balls, scissors and tape. Lessons plans such as these are supported by a grant under the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program.
