Publisher: Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum
Description: The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum features more than 30 exhibits of mollusks from around the world. Exhibits are devoted to shells in art and history, shell habitat, rare specimens, fossil shells, common Southwest Florida shells, and more. The learning lab features a hands-on play area for children, displays, games, and a tank with indigenous mollusks. The Museum offers special programs and tours to groups of all ages from schoolchildren to Elderhostels. Tours consist of a slide presentation on the lifestyles of mollusks, and a hands-on display of Southwest Florida shells. Also highlighted are certain exhibits in the Great Hall of Shells, including live mollusks. School Shell Kits are available for purchase, and include teacher and student guide materials, as well as collection samples and labels. Educational videos are also available for purchase, which compliment the Kits. Various research articles, as well as games and information for kids, can be downloaded as PDF files from the website. The Nautilus, published through the Museum, is a peer-reviewed journal publishing articles on diverse aspects of the biology, ecology, and systematics of mollusks, and is one of the most traditional international journals in the field of malacology.
