Insertion loss testing tests an installed cable plant with a light source and power meter in a method that is similar to how a communications system transmits data over the cable plant. Insertion loss testing is used to test the cable plant and compare it to the loss budget calculated in the design phase to ensure the planned communications systems will work over the cable plant.
