Title: Crystals in Science, Math and Technology - Crystals: Geometry and Groups
Url: https://teachersinstitute.yale.edu/curriculum/units/1989/6/89.06.05.x....
Creator: Langan, James Francis
Publisher: Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute
Description: This unit discusses crystals, offering an opportunity to apply math to real-life objects: growing crystals, the history and theory of crystals, group theory, Miller indices, and mechanical drawing. It develops the symmetries of the equilateral triangle and the square and uses them to solve a chess problem. The Hermann-Mauguin system of naming groups is introduced, with a small discussion.
