SIOExplorer Federated Collections
Data Collections Available in SIOExplorer

As a federated search engine, SIOExplorer provides access to a variety of distinct data collections. Each collection represents a unique resource of unreplaceable scientific research.

SIO Cruise Collection

While individual researchers may maintain their own archives, and national and project repositories may store special data sets, SIOExplorer is unique because it preserves the complete context of an expedition, with all the data, images and documents from a wide range of disciplines and sensor systems all gathered in one persistent location, tagged with comprehensive metadata to enable searches and uses beyond the scope of the original scientific party activities.

SIO Photo Archives

The digital images of historical photographs of Scripps voyages.

EarthRef Seamounts Collection

Geophysical and geochemical data surrounding seamounts in the Pacific Ocean.

Educator's Collection

Curricular materials based upon data available in SIOExplorer, which were developed by Middle and High School Educators at workshops hosted by SIO.

SIO Marine Geological Samples

Geological and physical characterization of rocks and cores collected onboard SIO Research Vessels. .

Coming Soon

  • Instrumentation Collection
Documentation about equipment and data processing can be extremely valuable in the process of data analysis. The Instrumentation Collection will include owner's manuals for equipment on SIO vessels and documentation of processing procedures undertaken.
  • Deep Tow Archive
A digital inventory of media from the Deep Tow system has been completed, covering a span of 38 years of detailed near bottom investigation of the sea floor, with a combination of sonar systems, cameras, magnetometers and other sensors.  The Deep Tow inventory describes 1463 data objects from 101 cruises on SIO, WHOI, Navy and other vessels.

Prototype DIGARCH Collection

A prototype for a multi-institution testbed for scalable digital archiving, involving Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and SIO will soon be available in SIOExplorer. WHOI and SIO data from the Galapagos Region will be loaded into the digital library.

Data Collections Available at the Geological Data Center

An extensive collection of analog data is available from the Geological Data Center. These records date back to the 1950's, and include hand-written deck logs, standard cruise data, and a variety of historical documentation about processes and equipment. Efforts are underway to organize, catalog and make these resources available to the scientific community.

Additional Collections Managed by SIO

SIO Oceanographic Collections
SIO Oceanographic Collections

The Oceanographic Collections of SIO/UCSD world-renowned resources supporting basic research, educating current and future generations of scientists, providing factual information to governmental agencies and public policy makers, stimulating curiosity and scientific understanding in the citizens of the state of California, and providing a repository for samples collected by SIO researchers. The physical collections are unique. They are irreplaceable because they record the state of the ocean environment at specific points in time. The collections are repositories of information concerning the present and past states of the world ocean, which furnish the foundation for predicting the future.

Enduring Resources for Earth Science Education
Enduring Resources for Earth Sciences Education (ERESE) Collection

Promoting, creating and publishing of Enduring Resources for Earth Science Education in a collaboration between middle and high school teachers and Earth scientists.

Seamount Catalog
Seamount Catalog

A digital archive for bathymetric seamount maps that can be viewed and downloaded in various formats. This catalog contains morphological data, sample information, related grid and multibeam data files, as well as user-contributed files that all can be downloaded.

SIO Archive Collection
Historical Material - SIO Archive Collection

California Explores the Ocean currently includes a collection of 800 black and white photographs, 400 color images, 2000 documents and other resources describing four voyages of HORIZON and other Scripps research ships.

The digital images of historical photographs of Scripps voyages come from the collections of the Scripps Archives. Scripps sailors and scientists often took cameras with them on their voyages and later donated their images to the Scripps Archives.
