Edison Wire System Neutral Return -

Is this unbalanced neutral current flow one way only back to the transformer center tap or does it also "cycle" as the hot phase wires do?

If it is one way, does this current get directed to ground at the center tap or is it somehow reintroduced into the phase wires?

If it cycles, as the phase wires do, how does it not impede the flow of the unbalanced current back to the transformer center tap?
